WEEE directive on lamp & tube recycling

What the main changes are from July 1st 2007 will be:

1.Lamps & tubes affected

It is mandatory for manufacturers to provide for end of life recycling of the
following lamp types:

All fluorescent tubes (both linear and other shapes)
All compact fluorescent lamps
High intensity discharge lamps (mercury, sodium & metal halide)

2.End of life recycling costs

The costs of end of life recycling will be recovered by manufacturers at the time of sale by a
specific WEE charge against each of the above lamp or tube types.

All our existing price arrangements with you will be increased on July 1st to fully reflect the
WEE charge levied on us and this will be shown as a separate line on invoice against each
affected lamp type.

We understand that the WEEE charge will be 15p per item for all fluorescent tubes, High intensity discharge lamps (mercury, sodium & metal halide). All compact fluorescent lamps used as direct repplacements for incandescant lamps for example BC, ES, SBC & SES cap lamps will be 3p per item.

3.End of life recycling method

At end of product life it is the responsibility of the user to return products to an approved bulk
collection point.

We have designated Branches that have a collection service, please contact your local branch for details.

We will of course be pleased to discuss any special requirements to suit your own specific requirements.

Whilst Luminaires are also covered by the same European legislation, it is understood that manufacturers will be increasing trade prices to incorporate the recycling charge rather than show this as a separate charge on invoice – again we await confirmation.

If you have any questions please contact your local branch.
